Acer Chromebook Spin 714 Unboxing: Great Specs, Realistic Price

In this new world of virtual-only events, it’s easy to get a little confused about which Chromebooks are here, which are coming, and which have just been announced. That was the case for me and with the Acer Chromebook Spin 714. Announced in the spring via the Next @ Acer Global Press conference, this device was exciting and a bit of a whirlwind. We got a hands-on look at it before production, but we couldn’t test or comment on much of anything as part of that coverage and had to put it back very quickly.

This isn’t a blow to Acer or any other company that allows us to test things out a bit early: it’s par for the course when talking about machines not yet ready for mass production. But somewhere in the quick experience I had with the Spin 714 and the excitement that came together with the also excellent Acer Chromebook Spin 513, I forgot the things about the Spin 714 that got me so excited in the first place.

When we were alerted that this Chromebook is now for sale at Best Buy and that we had a review unit on the way, I immediately went back to the early hands-on video and were quickly reminded of why. This might be one of the best Chromebooks from Acer to date. From build quality to definite feature to the now-known price tag of $729, there’s not much to knock this Chromebook out, and we’re excited to bring it back to the office in an official fashion to begin the review process.

As a reminder, this Chromebook brings exactly the specs. In a world where high-end hardware fetches upwards of $1,000 (a similar-spec HP Dragonfly Chromebook is nearly double the price), it’s refreshing to see Acer release a well-made, well-equipped Chromebook like this without letting the price slip away.

With a spec sheet like that it seems to put it above any pre-made Acer Chromebook in my opinion, and a form factor that makes it productive and portable, there’s clearly a lot to like about this Chromebook.

I haven’t yet started the review process seriously on this, but we were able to quickly test a few things this time and had to wait the last time. Before we talk about those, I can already tell you that the build quality, color, fit and finish of the Spin 714 are outstanding. It looks great, it feels great, and there’s definitely better quality to this device than there’s been in previous high-end Acer Chromebooks. I really love the display, keyboard, and stock USI stylus that Acer has put into this machine, and there’s no real question about speed with these internal components.

The things we couldn’t really talk about last time were the standards and speaker quality. Both are very impressive, and in the video you’ll hear more of the speakers this time around. It’s loud and plump, and I look forward to having it at my disposal when review time begins. Second is performance. With Octane scores of 81000+ and a speedometer 2.0 of around 240, You don’t have to wonder if this Chromebook is fast or not. ignite.

Obviously there are things about battery, screen, portability, and long-term use of things like the trackpad and keyboard that I’ll need time to really evaluate, but Acer has put together a little beast in the Chromebook. I love the Spin 513 I’m using at this very moment and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the HP Dragonfly Chromebook (review is on the way), but this new Spin 714 has the potential to be found A real cool place to add almost every feature you could want and keep the price realistic. With several 12th-gen Intel Chromebooks on the way, this is good news for Acer and hopefully a sign of things to come in the Chromebook space as 2022 rolls on.
