Brendan Fraser turns 600 lbs solitary for new movie The Whale when he returns to Hollywood

Brendan Fraser’s ’90s heart turned 600-pound man for his new movie Whale.

In the first look picture from The Whale, Fraser underwent a major physical transformation in order to play a fat man.

Fraser, 53, seems as far out of the sculptural realms of actors that fans remember as in George Of The Jungle and Encino Man.

A24 directed by Darren Aronofsky sees Fraser playing a man who is “obese” and “struggling to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter,” according to Variety. The actor wore prosthetic limbs in order to achieve the look, according to IndieWire.

Adapted from the 2012 play The Whale by director Samuel D. Hunter, the drama will have its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. A release date has not been set yet.

Fraser previously discussed his role in the film during an interview with Unilad, where he discussed the “roomy” and “cumbersome” wardrobe and expected the role to make a “lasting impression.”

“It’s going to look like something you’ve never seen before,” Fraser told the outlet. “That’s really all I can tell you…The wardrobe and outfit were extensive, seamless, exhausting. This is definitely a far cry from anything I’ve ever done but don’t be shy…I know it will make a lasting impression.”

The film is set to be Fraser’s first leading role in nearly 10 years, following the release of the 2013 direct-to-DVD action movie.

Fraser has already become a household name thanks to his starring role in Tarzan spoof George Of The Jungle, having played Richard ‘Rich’ O’Connell in the The Mummy franchise.

The actor is now enjoying a career renaissance after stepping away from the limelight, with roles in Batgirl and a prominent role in Martin Scorsese’s new film Killers of the Flower Moon.

The movie star also has a reputation for being very down-to-earth with fans.

Earlier this year, Fraser made a fan’s day when he gently bumped her fist into a meet-and-greet at the Calgary Expo in Canada this week.

Brendan left one girl with a wide smile on her face thanks to their sweet interaction in which she thanked him for making her childhood “so wonderful”.

This wasn’t always an easy path for Fraser, who has been open about the lows of his career.

In 2018, Brendan opened up about how sexual assault by an influential Hollywood personality and years of doing his own stunts virtually ruined his film career.

The actor, who was a household name in the ’90s and ‘2000s with hits like George of the Jungle and the Mummy franchise, told GQ in a lengthy profile on how there has been a steady decline in acting roles in recent years.

Several factors seem to have contributed to this, including a failed marriage, a growing list of health problems, and a downward spiral of depression.

Fraser explained in the profile for the first time that he was sexually harassed in 2003 by the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Philip Burke.

The alleged incident occurred in 2003 at the Beverly Hills Hotel while they were having lunch.

‘His left hand stretches around,’ he told GQ, ‘holding my cheek, one of his fingers touching me.’

And he started moving it. I felt sick. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I would cry.

Immediately leaving the luncheon, Fraser told his then-wife Afton Smith to interact, but he remained silent for fear of embarrassment and professional damage.

Although he did not publicize the incident, he eventually reported it to the HFPA, but their response was clear: Fraser was rarely invited back to the Globes after 2003.

In the article, Burke says he wrote a letter to Fraser about the incident but “didn’t admit any wrongdoing.”

Fraser said he became depressed and began telling himself that he deserved what happened to him.

‘I blamed myself and was miserable – because I was saying, ‘It’s nothing; this man reached out and stopped feeling’. That summer went on – and I don’t remember what I went to work on after that.

Fraser also says that the roles he was playing affected him materially. His physical start from the 1997 movie “George of the Jungle” is quickly fading out.

Ultimately, the injuries he received while performing the stunts required multiple surgeries:

He needed a lumbar laminectomy, a surgery that removes the back of the lumbar vertebra, to make more space inside the spinal canal.

However, it didn’t take long and had to be done again a year later. He underwent partial knee replacements, more back surgery that involved attaching several compressed spinal pads together and even surgery to repair the vocal cords.

Fraser said he’s been in and out of hospitals for nearly seven years.

Fraser was previously married to actress Afton Smith from 1998 to 2008. They share children Leland Frances Fraser, 16, Holden Fletcher Fraser, 17, and Griffin Arthur Fraser, 19.
