The National Football League now has its own streaming service.
Premiering Monday, NFL launches NFL+ for $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year.
The subscription will include all pre-season games out of the market, which were previously only available with a subscription to the NFL Game Pass for $99.99 per year. The NFL pre-season begins August 4 with the Jacksonville Jaguars facing the Las Vegas Raiders. Since this will be a nationally televised game, it will not be shown on NFL+.
NFL+ will also include direct mobile access to the local regular season, prime-time and post-season games, which were previously available for free on the Yahoo Sports app.
NFL+ marks the first time the NFL has run its own streaming service, giving the league a new futuristic platform to showcase potentially exclusive games.. Both Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association already sell subscriptions to their streaming services that include off-market games.
Hans Schroeder, executive vice president and chief operating officer of NFL Media, said NFL+ won’t initially include regular season-exclusive games, but it may ultimately depend on how viewing habits evolve in the coming years. The association closed its domestic broadcasting rights over the next seven to 11 years.
“It is another option that we will consider with all our other options,” Schroeder said. “We’re really excited about where NFL+ could be headed. Once the media and the sports distribution business continues to change and evolve, there are a lot of different factors.”
The NFL is in the process of renewing the Sunday Ticket package and will select a streaming partner, possibly Apple or Amazon, by the fall. This package costs about $300 per month and provides access to all out-of-market games on Sundays. DirecTV has held the rights to the Sunday Ticket since 1994 but is not bidding for the rights after the current contract expires this season. Schroeder said in an interview that the length of Sunday’s new deal has yet to be determined, but the league wants to give a new partner “the right path to success”.
NFL + benefits added
In addition to the games, it will include NFL + NFL Network on-demand shows and archived NFL Films programming.
For $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year, NFL also sells NFL + Premium. This subscription includes full and extensive replays of the game and access to the movie “All-22,” a comprehensive view of the game that coaches use to see how all 22 players move in a given game.
“We look forward to continuing to grow NFL+ and deepening our relationship with fans of all ages and demographics, giving them access to a massive amount of NFL content, including the most valuable content in the media industry: live NFL games,” NFL Commissioner Roger said. Goodell in a statement.
